Safe

October 2004

Taken on Natalia's second day of life. Notice the security band around her ankle....it has the word "safe" on it. This one of my favorite baby images of her....I love Lincoln's hands, and the texture of his jeans, I love her little mouth in the top corner, and I love to remember the day she arrived. What a sweet day it was! I thought it was a fitting image for this week.

She is ours. It is our job to keep her safe.

The past week has just been strange. The MAN who gave Talia the giant bird, kept giving her gifts. (Smaller ones.) He and his wife have lived near us for over a year, and never spoken a WORD to us. Now it seems that every time we were outside we would hear "Talia, I have a present for you." We don't know his name...I don't know how he knows Talia's name, except I do yell it a lot. Lincoln went to his door and asked him to STOP! He actually had to say, "I need to speak with the man who is giving my daughter gifts." I wish I was as brave as Lincoln. I was there all those times, Natalia was always afraid and never would go up to him. I am grateful for that. The man agreed not to give her anything again. I don't want to see him again...there is such a awkward feeling there. Why was he doing this? Everything I taught my daughter about strangers was being ruined by these dumb gifts.

We have installed extra locks, so she can't go out or open the door for someone. Both of which she has done in the past. She is my little shadow, but there are times in the day (I do shower.) when I can't be there. Do I really think he wanted to trick her into trusting him? I have to assume that, I don't care about him....I care about my little girl.

The picture is sweet but your story freaks me out, Jeri! I would have sent Lincoln over for sure! How weird this happened! Well, since you never had talked to them before, you don't have to worry about not starting now. Did he send that dog out on purpose? Start singing "Safety Kids"! I need to get those CDs for my kids.

How scary! (you may not remember me, but my son was the binkie boy for Darice and Holly.) I too, got chills when I read that. Talk about taking away your security in your own home. I wonder if there is any information the local police could possibly give you about that guy. If not, then at least they'd maybe have a heads up this dude is trouble for future reference. And Kudos to your husband!

Your little blurb could have been so much longer... but I guess you got the story out. It is such a scary tale of weirdness. I am proud of Lincoln for his quick action on the visit, the locks and the neighbor notification. He's a do-er that one... :-)

I admire your determination, your sharing of the story and your priorities about what is most important.

Wow. That is creepy. I don't know if we would have had the guts to say "no more, please." Go Lincoln! That really is just weird that he would keep giving her things...

Yes, Lincoln called the police. They are aware of him now, and he has no record. They said our actions will mostly likely deter him from our family if he is a predator. If he is not a predator...well, Talia won't get any more gifts.

The gifts where basically girly trash that he happened to have around his home. The bottom box of a perfume gift set that was heart shaped for example.

I think that anytime you have a weird or creepy feeling about someone, you HAVE to act on it. We had a situation with a man when Maia was younger and both Michael and I felt he shouldn't be around her. We had to hold our ground on it, just like you and Lincoln. I love that Lincoln went over there. What a good daddy.

Oh how scarey! I'm glad Lincoln went over there, and that you guys called the police. How creepy. Talia's lucky to have such wonderful parents who are there to protect her! Good job!

SCARY!!! way to be alert and on top of the situation. You can never be too careful these days. Strangers are not mean and rude to kids. They are "nice" and "trusting" to young children on purpose. I am so sorry that this is such a scare. extra Prayers for your family and their safety! I can TOTALLY see lincoln going over there and being assertive. I can hear his voice, and picture exactly what he would have sounded like! good for him! i ADORE that picture by the way! how sweet it is!

Very scary. You are lucky to have such a brave husband, I could not have done it either.

On a happy note, we LOVE the Safety Kids. We have almost all the Brite stuff and my kids love them. I own them more for my sake than for theirs. Takes me back to my childhood days and makes me feel young again. All the while teaching my kids great messages and fun songs.

Hmmm . . .that is very strange. Also sad that we find it so scary. Still, you'd think he'd introduce himself and try to be friendly with the rest of the fam or something! Weird. I'm sure she is safe with you. I love that picture too.
